The Missionary Decade. Day Four — “The Vine and the Branches: The Secret of a Living and Fruitful Family”
May 18, 2026
We encourage everyone to respond to His Beatitude Sviatoslav’s invitation to prepare properly for the feast of Pentecost. Over the next few days, we will reflect on passages from the Gospel of John in the context of married and family life. Together, we will seek answers to important questions: how to preserve love in times of trial, how to learn unity, forgiveness, self-sacrifice, and mutual support, and how to build a family centered on God.

A reading of the Holy Gospel according to John 14:27–15:7
In today’s Word of God, we hear Christ preparing His disciples for His departure, revealing to them an important truth: His departure is not a defeat, but an integral stage in the fulfilment of the Father’s plan for the salvation of humanity. In this context, the image of “the vine and the branches” becomes the key to understanding Christian life: the disciples can bear fruit only when they remain in living unity with Christ. Unity with God is the essential condition for the fruitfulness of human life. This means that fruit is not merely the result of human effort or diligence, but прежде всего the consequence of a person’s unity with Christ. Without this connection, even the greatest human activity can remain empty busyness without true meaning.
This principle has a very practical dimension for marriage and family life because no marriage or family is self-sufficient in itself; they are not the vine but only the branches. Accordingly, the source of their life is not within themselves but in the One who created them — in God. Unfortunately, in the modern world we often see people trying to build a happy family life relying exclusively on their own resources: emotions, material stability, or shared plans. Yet, with time, it becomes evident that this is not enough: feelings change, strength is exhausted, and difficulties break even the best plans and intentions. For this reason, the true strength and endurance of the family are born not from human resources, but from a living connection with God. Only by remaining in Him can spouses preserve love, endure trials, and bear fruit that does not perish, because unity with God is the principal condition for the growth and fruitfulness of married life.
Let us note that a family bears fruit not when everything is perfect but when it abides in Christ. Therefore, a proper spiritual life in marriage and family is not simply a beautiful addition but the very foundation upon which everything is built. In practice, this means that spouses and families must consciously find time for common prayer, make the Word of God the guiding principle in their decisions, strive to live in a state of sanctifying grace through active participation in the Holy Mysteries, and raise their children in a healthy Christian spirit, teaching them love for God and His Church.
At times, families who sincerely strive to live in unity with Christ experience various trials. Then the temptation may arise to think that faith perhaps “does not work”, because how is it possible that those who are close to God also pass through difficulties? Yet precisely in today’s Gospel Christ gives the key to finding the answer to this question: “Every branch that bears fruit He prunes so that it may bear more fruit” (Jn 15:2). This means that trials in good families are not a sign of God’s absence or of the ineffectiveness of Christian life but often become a process of purification. If they are endured with God, they do not destroy but rather bring even greater fruit into one’s life.
Therefore, the true secret of a strong family is not to have perfect circumstances or flawless relationships but not to lose unity with Christ. For it is precisely this unity that makes love enduring, gives meaning to sacrifice, and allows the family to bear the true fruit of love and life.
Mission Tasks:
1. Personal Level: Let us ask ourselves, do I truly remain in unity with Christ? And how is this concretely manifested in my life?
2. Parish Level: Together with our family, let us resolve to participate regularly in parish services and in the Holy Mysteries in order to build our family upon a living relationship with God.
3. Missionary Level: Let us support a family that is experiencing difficulties — through a word, prayer, or concrete help — bearing witness that even amid trials, life with Christ bears fruit.
