Parish Feast in Newcastle
October 5, 2023
On 1st of September 2023, the Eparchy of Melbourne transitioned to the New Calendar, leading to the celebration of the Feast of the Protection of the Mother of God in the new style in many parishes, including the small yet vibrant parish in the city of Newcastle.
This year, the feast holds special significance for parishioners as it commemorates three important events. The parish is celebrating its 65th anniversary since the formation of the church committee, during which it was decided to raise funds for the construction of a new church dedicated to the Protection of the Mother of God. Ten years later, the cornerstone of this church was blessed, and after a 35-year wait, in 1988, the church was consecrated.
Fr. Andriy Mykytyuk, Synkellos for the Laity and guest from Melbourne, arrived to celebrate this occasion with the parishioners. During the Divine Liturgy, he delivered a homily emphasizing the importance of this feast and the significance of listening to God and following His will in the lives of all. He stressed that it is only when we do so that God can perform miracles for us.
Following the Liturgy, a festive banquet took place at the Community Hall, where Fr. Paul Berezniuk, the administrator of the Church of the Protection of the Mother of God in Newcastle, expressed heartfelt gratitude to all those present for their support. He underscored that this parish is not only thriving but also growing, thanks to the future generations who are already children but are growing up to be with God in this parish.
Father Andriy Mykytyuk also extended greetings to all attendees and conveyed best wishes from Bishop Mykola. He wished for fruitful growth for this small community and called on everyone to continue praying together and supporting one another.
All participants were filled with joy as this celebration was truly grand and unforgettable. The gifts from parishioners for the children of Father Andriy were a delightful surprise, and everyone present rejoiced that they were remembered, visited, and celebrated together.
